Happy Thanksgiving Dress

So it hit me yesterday that Elena had nothing to wear for thanksgiving! Well actually she has tons of stuff to wear, but nothing that I made just for the occasion. And of course there’s nothing like waiting till the week you need something to start making it to get you motivated. I’ve been saving this gifted vintage repro fabric for a project but wasn’t sure what. It’s so happy and bright. I have not altered the saturation, its all really that bright.

The back has a false button and a real one.
I just laid it out and cut an a-line dress. I knew I wanted a kimono sleeve too since I’m tired of sleeveless styles from the summertime and it’s a bit chill in the evenings. I also wanted a waist tie since it was going to be a loose style. I also decided it was going to be long but not too long.  The only thing I didn’t know what to do with was the collar. What happened was kind of accidental.
I was thinking of doing a placket with buttons but I started thinking about peter pan type collars after watching the Dust Bowl last night on PBS and seeing tons of photos of little girls in dresses in the 30s. I just happened to have pieces of fabric already in a long collar shape after cutting away the underarm portion. I basically just sewed them together and hey a collar and I used every scrap!

As you can tell by this point I couldn’t resist putting her in a headscarf like a little landgirl. Another one of my new favorite shows on PBS. She’s determined to water the plants.

I just can't pick a favorite picture so I'm putting all of them. That's my right!

Proof she enjoyed it!
